Dr. Harvey Jian-Min Hou received his BSc degree (1984) in Physical Chemistry from Wuhan University and PhD degree (1993) in Analytical Chemistry from Peking University. In China, he was promoted to the Full Principle Investigator (1998) at Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences. After entering the United States, Dr. Hou joined the Faculty (2002) in the Department of Chemistry at Gonzaga University. After four years, he became an Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. Currently Dr. Hou is an Associate Professor of Forensic Science at Alabama State University. In addition, he was an Adjunct Faculty (2003-2010) at the Rockefeller University, an Visiting Professor (2008-2011) at Boston College, a Research Affiliate (2009-2011) at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an Adjunct Associate Professor (2011) at University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth.

Fernando Santos Beneit studied Biology at University of León (Spain). He spent ten months as a Socrates-Erasmus grant holder at the department of Molecular Cell Physiology of the “Vrije Universiteit” in Amsterdam (Holland), where he worked with the Gram-negative bacterium, Paracoccus denitrificans. He conducted his PhD in molecular biology at University of León, where he was awarded a PhD (cum laude) in 2010, as well as the 2012 University of León Extraordinary Prize for the best thesis in Biology. He dedicated his ten years to studying phosphate regulation in the model actinomycete Streptomyces coelicolor, with particular focus on secondary metabolite regulation and nutrient stress cross-talk. He developed most of my work at the Institute of Biotechnology of León, but He also collaborated with different researches at the department of Molecular Biology in the Faculty of Biology as well as with several biotechnology companies. In 2013, He worked as postdoctoral researcher in the Institute of Biomedicine and Biotechnology of Cantabria, where his role encompassed not only my ongoing research responsibilities, but also a range of economic and administrative duties. Since 2014 I am working as Research Associate in the Center for Bacterial Cell Biology at Newcastle University where He his studying distinct aspects of the streptomycetes biology.

Dr. Naveen Patil serves the Arkansas Department of Health as the Medical Director for the Infectious Diseases Branch. He is also the Project Director of the Hansen’s Program grant. Dr. Patil serves as the Chairman of the Arkansas AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) Formulary Advisory Committee. In his capacity, Dr. Patil works in coordination with the Center of Health Protection at ADH to set policy direction for the department and assure that programmatic responsibilities are met. Dr. Patil has grant funding for these activities from CDC, HRSA and DHHS. He also directs patient care activities for the TB program and also guides clinical personnel at the Local Health Units and other facilities in HIV/STI care. Dr. Patil is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases and holds a voluntary faculty position in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, College of Medicine. He also has Master’s degrees in Health Services Administration and Gerontology, besides a Fellowship in Hospital Administration. He is an accomplished speaker and has presented at various regional, national and international meetings. He was awarded the highest honor for TB control efforts in USA in the year 2013. He was also chosen by AAPI USA for the Distinguished Young Physician Award in 2014. He was selected as a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America for excellence and services in the field of Infectious Diseases. Dr. Patil has published several journal articles and presented posters at National and International meetings. He serves as an editor, sub editor and reviewer for over 50 medical journals. He serves on the Board of National Tuberculosis Controllers Association and on Advisory Board Heartland National TB Center. Francisco Carrau is Professor and head of the Enology Section of the Food Science Department of University of the Republic. He has also a deep relation with the wine industry as a part time R&D director and Head Winemaker of his family owned Winery in Uruguay. Castel Pujol winery is one of the leaders of the emergence of exports of Uruguayan quality wines in the last two decades. He was graduated in Biological Sciences at the University of the Republic Uruguay, Faculty of Sciences, in 1987 (specialized in Fungal Genetics). In 2003 he obtained his PhD in Chemistry in the same University at the School of Chemistry in a joint project with the Head of Wine Microbiology at the Australian Wine Research Institute (Dr. Paul A. Henschke) in a topic related to yeast wine aroma compounds and nitrogen metabolism. He had directed 6 Masters and 3 PhD thesis in Wine Microbiology and Aroma Compounds since 1998. He conducts the first post grade course of Uruguay in Wine Biotechnology in collaboration with invited Professors. Participates or conduct of more than 10 projects about grapes and wine together with the main Institutions of the field in Uruguay (University, LATU, INIA INAVI, IIBCE, etc.). Dr. Robert FH Dekker is Director of the Biorefining Research Institute at Lakehead University (Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada), and Senior Ontario Research Chair in Biorefining Research. He holds Adjunct Professorships at Lakehead University in the Dept. of Biology and Dept. of Chemistry (Faculty of Science) and Faculty of Natural Resource Management. Dr. Dekker graduated with Honours in Biochemistry in 1969 from the University of Western Australia (Perth). He then moved to the tropical city of Townsville (Queensland, Australia), where he graduated with a Masters (1972) and PhD (1975) degrees in Microbial Biochemistry/Enzymology/Carbohydrate Chemistry from James Cook University. A two-year post-doctoral term was spent at Albert-Ludwig University of Freiburg in Germany (1975-76) where he studied the biosynthesis of bacterial cell-wall polysaccharides. In 1976, he worked in academia at the University of Natal (Pietermaritzburg, South Africa) teaching Biochemistry, and returned to Australia in 1980, where he worked with Australian industry (Sydney) in Biotechnology (1980-81). In 1982, Dr. Dekker joined the CSIRO of Australia (Melbourne) to develop a program of research on plant biomass conversion (now referred to as biorefining). It was at the CSIRO that he developed the steam explosion technology as pretreatment for the enzymatic saccharification of lignocellulosic materials. Upon termination of the program in 1990, Dr. Dekker worked at various academic centers around the world (Murdoch University, 1993-96; Universidade Estadual de Londrina (Brazil), 1999-2002 and 2004-2006; Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha (Ciudad Real, Spain), 2006-2008) before taking up his present position at Lakehead University in Canada. Dr. Dekker has spent more than 40 years in research (academia, government and industry). He has held Visiting Professorships in Australia, Brasil, Chile, France, Spain and Turkey, has consulted for Australian industry on biotechnology and the United Nations (United Nations Development Fund in Chile, 1982). He is the author of 100 research and review publications, has presented 200 research papers at scientific meetings; national and international, and holds 3 patents on botryosphaeran.

Biography :

Raghavendra Amachawadi, assistant professor of food animal therapeutics in the College of Veterinary Medicine, and Travis Haug, program/project administrator in the kinesiology department in the College of Health and Human Sciences, were recognized as Professor and Professional Staff of the Week at the Nov. 4 men's home basketball game. Faculty Senate, the Office of the President, K-State Athletics and the Division of Communications and Marketing wish to recognize their contributions to K-State. Amachawadi started his professional academic career as a research assistant professor in the diagnostic medicine/pathobiology department in the College of Veterinary Medicine at K-State in July 2015. In 2017, he joined the clinical sciences department, in the position he currently holds.

Research Interest :

Raghavendra Amachawadi research interests are in the area of antimicrobial resistance in gut commensals and foodborne pathogens of swine and cattle production systems. Specifically, He has focused on understanding the mechanisms involved in the propagation and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance and on the role of non-antibiotic alternatives in contribution and mitigation of antimicrobial resistance in gut bacteria of cattle and swine. This involves both phenotypic and genotypic characterization of existing as well as novel resistance determinants. His research interests also include investigating both aerobic and or anaerobic bacterial flora of liver abscesses of feedlot cattle. These studies involve applications of microbiology, molecular epidemiology, and field based nutrition experiments.

Ming-Lung Yu, MD, PhD, is a Distinguished Professor at the College of Medicine, Kaohsiung Medical University, Taiwan. Professor Yu, a board-certified internist and gastroenterologist, is currently teaching at the Kaohsiung Medical University and Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital. Currently, he is also a Adjunct Professor at College of Biological Science and Technology, National Chiao-Tung University, Hsin-Chu, Taiwan, and at Institute of Biomedical Sciences, National Sun Yat-Sen University, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Professor Yu’s research interests in epidemiology and natural history of viral hepatitis have led him to publish more than 280 journal and review articles. Professor Yu has won numerous awards over his career in recognition of his research. In addition to his academic and clinical achievements, Professor Yu also holds various editorial roles with several scientific journals some of which include PLoS ONE, World Journal of Gastroenterology, and Korean Journal of Hepatology. He also frequently serves as a reviewer for major international journals in medicine, gastroenterology and hepatology, such as The Lancet, Gastroeneterology, Hepatology, Gut, Journal of Hepatology, Clinical Infectious Disease, Canadian Medical Association Journal, Thorax, Ontotarget, Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Scientific Reports and Journal of Infectious Diseases.
