In this perspective article, we delve into the fascinating world of polymerization, exploring its fundamental principles, technological applications, and promising avenues for future research and development.

Fundamentals of polymerization

At its essence, polymerization involves the chemical bonding of monomeric units to form polymer chains, typically through chain-growth or step-growth mechanisms. Chain-growth polymerization proceeds via the successive addition of monomers to an active polymer chain, facilitated by initiation, propagation, and termination steps, while step-growth polymerization occurs through the sequential reaction of functional groups in monomers to form covalent bonds between monomer units. The choice of polymerization mechanism, catalysts, and reaction conditions profoundly influences the properties and performance of the resulting polymers, allowing for precise control over molecular weight, composition, architecture, and end-group functionality.
