Impact of social factor on kidney donation

Abstract

Kidney transplant is the best treatment for the appropriately selected end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patient. Despite efforts to increase community awareness of kidney donation and transplantation, there remains a big gap between the number of kidneys needed and those available due to low community awareness of kidney donation and social cultural factors. Aim: to study the characters of kidney donors. Results: the mean age of the donor was 24.4 (±18) years, and most of the donors are at age group of 26 – 35 years. The male donor (67.4%) predominate over female donor (32.6%), with male to female ratio around 2: 1. The brother is the main donor (36%), followed by the sister (15%), thereafter, the son (12%), the mother (6.4%), the father (4%), and the daughter (3%). Second degree relative represents only 3.5%.Husband or wife as donors is about 3%.Comparing the brother and sister as donors ,the brother was more likely to donate to a male recipient while the sister was more likely to donate to a female recipient. The mother was found to mostly donate to a female recipient in comparison to the father whodonates more to male  recipient. Moreover, when comparing between the son and daughter, they have nearly the same pattern of donation as both showed more tendency to donate to male receipients. Son Conclusion:Males especially in brother relationship predominates significantly as kidney donors reflecting.
