Implementation of bio-inspired Self-Repairing Digital System

Abstract

The operation and structure of the endocrine system exhibits fault tolerance that has lead to the creation of reliability engineered electronic architecture. A novel multicellular electronic architecture has been introduced in this paper that has drawn inspiration from the endocrine system. The electronic architecture is a programmable cellular FPGA-like bio-inspired cellular array and made up of structurally identical cells. It coordinates the behaviour of cell groups, creating a system that performs arbitrary computation on a data stream thus leading to a self-repairing digital system. They serve as the most promising alternative for fault-tolerant systems. But such systems are still impractical in many cases, particularly due to the complex rerouting process that follows cell replacement, which includes extra hardware. The self-repairing architecture proposed in this paper simplifies the rerouting process without any additional hardware and also minimizes the unutilized resources. The entire architecture is divided in two layers and each layer has its own importance in maintaining the functions of the system even after fault recovery. This capability has made the system to operate in remote environments, such as outer space or deep sea.
