Implementing Black hole Password Entry Technique For Mitigating Shoulder-surfing Threat

Abstract

Shoulder-surfing using direct observation techniques, such as looking over someone's shoulder, to get passwords, PINs and other sensitive personal information – is a problem that has been difficult to overcome. When a user enters information using a keyboard, mouse, touch screen or any traditional input device, a malicious observer may be able to acquire the user’s password credentials. I present Blackhole, a system that mitigates the issues of shoulder surfing via a novel approach to user input. With user enters sensitive input (password, PIN, etc.) by filling up four boxes from the randomly selected six password blocks with the missing letters that fills the original password. In this technique, the user has to enter different letter combinations from his original password each time he/she logs in, making eavesdropping by a malicious observer largely impractical, developing more sophisticated methods to enhance our project in all possible ways.
