Mechanistic Investigation of Copper (II) Catalysed Oxidative Deamination and Decarboxylation of Histidine by Peroxomonosulphate in Buffered Medium
A systematic kinetic study on the oxidation of histidine by peroxomonosulphate (PMS) in acetic acidsodium acetate buffered medium (pH 3.6-4.8) and the catalytic effect of copper(II) was investigated. EPR spectral data ruled out the involvement of free radical intermediate. Formation of copper – histidine – PMS complex was established by cyclic voltammetric and UV –visible absorption studies. NMR studies confirmed that the product formed in this reaction was imidazole -4-acetaldehyde. A suitable mechanism was proposed.
